Composition in three movements for voice and Guitarra Expansiva

Je parle pour les gens habitués à trouver de la sagesse dans la feuille qui tombe, des problems gigantesques dans la fumée qui s’élève, des théories dans le vibrations de la lumière, de la pensée dans le marbres, et le plus horrible des mouvements dans l’immobilité. WHAT IS A GAIT?

Balzac dedicated an entire book to this subject, which in reality does not provide us with a definition, but creates through the writing itself a type of gait: the digression. It is only the dynamics that hold together the forms, simple weavings of spatial directions accomplished with the body, within which the gaze is inscribed.

Since the beginning of the twentieth century, scientists and scholars of the image such as Étienne Jules Marey and Eadweard Muybridge have tried to capture the gaits of animals such as horses, birds and humans, returning them to paper in the form of tracks or chronophotographic sequences.

We want to make an attempt of this journey ourselves with sound and signal still continuing on the path of digression.

The animal we have chosen is the Zonkey (ES cebrasno), a rather rare cross between a male zebra and a female donkey, whose gaits, although not too different from those of all equines, remain an unknown and therefore a fertile field for sound and graphic exploration.

Why chart the gaits of a hybrid?

The answer lies more in our wandering biographies than in a scientific approach.

Our journey moves from the idea of nepantla, a finding of oneself “between” different possible identities, a staying on the threshold.


CEBRASNO. TRES MARCHAS

is a composition in three movements: paso (step), amblado (amble) — a gait adopted by many quadrupeds moving at the same time the front and back legs of the same side — and huida (canter).

The composition is most of all a process of writing: from the sound gesture to graphics (a serie of oil pastel drawings), to scores.

All these “writings” move with the idea of tracing imaginary gaits of a hybrid and unknown critter, the zonkey.

A found footage video loop showing three zonkey born in Florence, Mexico and Kenya — accompanied by a sound poem — introduce the multimedia path in the space.

La definición de mi ser es:

Dicen que, al igual de las mulas y todas la creaturas híbridas, somos incapaces de reproducirnos, debido a un numero irregular de cromosomas que perturba la meiosis.
Sin embargo, es Charles Darwin en el Origen de las Especies, quien recoge el caso de un cebrasno que al aparearse con una yegua baya dio lugar a un triple hibrido.

Si dice che, come i muli e tutte le creature ibride, non siamo in grado di riprodurci, a causa di un numero irregolare di cromosomi che disturba la meiosi.
Tuttavia, è Charles Darwin, nell'Origine delle specie, a riportare il caso di una zebra che, accoppiatasi con una cavalla baia, diede origine a un ibrido triplo.
